Soft water
Soft water is water that is usually
found in reservoirs, lakes, and
rivers, and has the property of
low amounts of minerals. Soft
water, such as hot spring water,
feels smooth and clean, moisturizes
the skin, and allows soap to lather
smoothly onto human skin. |
Hard water
Hard water contains compounds
such as lime, calcium, magnesium,
steel/iron, copper, nitrate, chloride,
silicon, and sodium. Of these,
calcium and magnesium are those
compounds found in the highest
amounts. They do not exist as
elements in and of themselves,
but as melted chloride, bicarbonate,
sulfate, and nitrate. Water containing
minerals such as these is referred
to as hard water. |

Hard water is born as a result of various
minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, dissolving.
This occurs during the process of rain or
snow soaking into the ground.
The degree of hardness of water in wells and
in underground water is particularly high.
The white powder that can be found on the
bottom or the sides of kettles after boiling
water, or the stains that can be seen in washbowls
and bathtubs, serve as clues that suggest
the presence of hard water. |
